What is process steam for and where is it used?
Process steam is water steam. It is used to provide process heat for a production process. This often forms the basis for further energy utilization according to the concept of combined heat and power generation. Steam is also seldom used as a material. It is used in almost all production processes in the food industry, chemical and pharmaceutical industry, paper production, metal production and processing, building materials' industry, glass production and processing, waste recycling and other branches of industry.
Steam is used in countless food production processes.
Used for cooking, sterilizing, moistening, drying, packaging, cleaning and other applications in the food and beverage industry.

Steam is the energy source
In many stages of paper, pulp and wood processing, steam is required to guarantee the temperature control of large areas during drying or production. Fast, reliable availability of large amounts of energy is required here.
Over 600* production sites in Germany alone require process steam as an energy source.

In addition to the three major industrial sectors, process steam is also used in animal feed production, metal production and processing, waste management, the building materials' industry, glass production and processing and other industrial sectors.

According to estimates by German steam boiler manufacturers, around 15,000 process steam systems(1) are currently in operation in German-speaking countries. All of these plants are largely supplied with natural gas, petroleum products and a small proportion with electricity.
This corresponds to a CO2 equivalent of approx. 20 million tons per year.
Using more intelligent technology and an EMS alone can already save 10% in energy and CO2.
Additional actions on the existing systems could lead to further savings of 15%.
Through the intelligent use of up to 100% renewable energy sources, CO2 emissions can even be reduced to zero.
